Want a designer wedding gown without the high price tag?

With a little know-how, patience and bargain hunting it’s possible to have that gorgeous gown you’ve always dreamt of – without breaking the bank. Here’s how.

  1. Call round bridal salons in your area to see when they will be selling off their old stock to make room for new dresses. If you start your hunt early this is a great way to get huge discounts on fabulous designer gowns.

  2. Ask some bridal salons when they will be selling off their display dresses. Again, you can get up to 50% off the cost and still walk away with the designer dress of your dreams. Just be aware that you may have to factor in dry cleaning costs.
  1. If you’re after a chic, simple gown, buy a designer bridesmaid dress in cream or white. These are a fraction of the cost of wedding gowns but look every bit as elegant. Spruce it up with a few crystals, an eye-catching necklace, and top off your look with a matching veil and sparkling tiara.
  1. Rent a designer wedding gown. Check your local Yellow Pages for shops in your area that hire out bridal attire.
  1. Fallen in love with a dress that’s out of your price range? Then ask the store if it can be ordered in a less expensive fabric.

  2. Wear the dress your mother, grandmother, sister or friend was married in. This is a great way to honour someone close to you, and the gown can be the ‘something old’ in your outfit.
  1. If you find a gown you love in a bridal salon, ask if they will do you a package deal. You may be able to buy your bridesmaid dresses from the same place and get a discount. Even if there’s no offer advertised, there’s no harm in asking.

Shopping for your wedding dress is a very special time and one you will no doubt look back on fondly many years from now. So relax, take a deep breath and start your search. Bring along a close friend or relative you can depend of to give an honest second opinion – and above all, keep it fun!
