Planning your first holiday as husband and wife is, for most couples, one of the highlights of wedding planning. And with a little foresight you won’t need to take out that second mortgage to afford the trip of a lifetime. Here’s how to have an unforgettable honeymoon – whatever your budget.

• Ask guests to buy honeymoon vouchers instead of wedding gifts. They can either pay money into a specially set up honeymoon bank account or purchase flight vouchers from the airline you’ll be travelling with.
• Pay for your wedding expenses by credit card and use the frequent flier points you accumulate for your honeymoon.
• Postpone your trip so you have more time to save up for it. This will give you both something to look forward to after all the excitement of the wedding has died down.
• Holiday somewhere close to home so you can splash out on accommodation, fine dining and romantic daytrips.
• Look into holiday packages which include flights, accommodation and meals. Many of these offer excellent value so ask your travel agent for details.
• Book your honeymoon last minute. You won’t get as much choice on destination, but you will be able to take advantage of some great last minute discounts. The surprise may even add to the fun.
• It’s the thought that counts, so think of little things you can do to make your trip extra special. Pack some massage oil and candles, surprise your new husband with a candlelit dinner on the beach or secretly arrange that room upgrade to a suite with a spa bath. Wherever you are, these thoughtful details will be truly appreciated are bound to make the start of married life seem even more romantic.
