Six Cost Saving Tips to make your Dream Wedding a Reality

Wondering how to afford your dream day? Sick of cutting corners? Then take a look at these top tips to cut your wedding costs without compromising on style.

Tip 1 – Have a long engagement
Getting married is a once in a lifetime experience and you don’t want to be constantly skimping on things. Have a long engagement so you and your fiancé more time to save up for the day of your dreams.

Tip 2 – Prioritise
Some couples want a big, spectacular wedding, whilst others prefer a more intimate affair so they can spend their money on an amazing honeymoon. So decide from the word Go what you want to splash out on and where you’d like to save.

Tip 3 – Speak to the parents
Many people feel uncomfortable speaking openly about their finances so arrange two separate meetings – one with your parents and one with your in-laws. Politely ask them how much money they can contribute and be grateful for whatever they can give.

Tip 4 – Set the date after you’ve set your budget
Next, calculate how much it will cost for you to have the kind of wedding you want.  Take away your parents’ contribution and work out how many months it will take for you to save for the remainder. Ideally, only then should you set a date.

Tip 5 – Build in a buffer
There will always be hidden costs, so count on spending 10% more than you think you will. Build this into your budget from the start.

Tip 6 – Save automatically
Make saving easy by setting up a standing order with your bank (this is sometimes known as a bank deposit or direct transfer). This will automatically transfer your monthly wedding contributions into a high-interest account directly after your salary is paid so you’re not tempted to spend it.
